Volunteering with CRG Homecare

By Hannah West

Gill joined CRG Homecare’s Quality Assurance team, as a Quest for the Best volunteer, in May due to the Covid-19 lockdown.

As a Quest for the Best volunteer, Gill completes telephone questionnaires with CRG Homecare service users to determine how they feel about the service provided.

Some of CRG Homecare’s service users are housebound and so the calls not only help CRG Homecare to measure how safe and effective its service is, but it is also a friendly call to our service users who may feel lonely.

Gill said: “I decided to volunteer to give back to the community and help those individuals who are vulnerable and isolating at the moment, whilst I have time on my hands.

“It’s lovely to be able to speak to the individuals who CRG Homecare provides care to. As I am independent from the branch, some service users find it easier to talk to someone from a different department.”

Before Gill started the telephone questionnaires, full training was provided by the Quality Assurance Team.

Her mentor Oliver Maxell, QA Auditor, went through what was expected of the volunteers, explained the paperwork and how to do the phone calls. Ongoing support is given to the volunteers via a weekly video call and a company mobile phone is provided to do the calls.

Gill commented: “The support given by CRG Homecare has been brilliant. Despite being a volunteer and doing the calls in my home, I very much feel part of a wider team. I have also completed online adult safeguarding training, so I felt prepared.

“We have weekly video calls with Oliver but he is also on hand during the week, in case I have any queries.”

As part of the service user questionnaire calls, Gill also ensures they understand how to log a complaint and if they have a care folder in their property.

“I am finding my volunteering role so enjoyable and rewarding. I will be returning back to my full-time job once lockdown restrictions have eased however as I am enjoying the role and it is flexible, I will continue to make time to volunteer and help CRG Homecare.

“If anyone is thinking about volunteering, I would advise them to go for it. It’s a great way to give back to the community, help those who may feel lonely and so it’s flexible around you,” added Gill.

CRG Homecare is looking for individuals to join their team of Quest for the Best volunteers. If you are interested, please contact Dianne Underwood via: dianneunderwood@crg.uk.com.
